Yi Zhang, Conductor

Zhang Yi was born in 1972, in An Hui province, China, and began studying violin at the age of 5. Six years later he entered the elementary school affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music. In 1995 he graduated from the Conducting Department of the Central Conservatory of Music, where he had studied under the guidance of professor Xu Xin and professor Ji Ruikai.

From 1994 to 2000 he was appointed as the Chief Conductor of the China Youth Symphony Orchestra (CYSO). During the CYSO tour to Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong in 1995 -1996 Zhang Yi was received with great acclaim in local news mediums, describing him as "brilliant, incredible, and charming young conductor" and personal recognition from the King and Queen of Malaysia.

Since 1994, Zhang Yi has also been frequently invited as guest conductor by many orchestra in China and worldwide, such as the China National Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Macao Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Central Chinese Traditional Orchestra, China National Ballet Orchestra, China Central Opera House, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Cuba Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Colonne (Paris), conducting numerous concerts, operas, ballets and recordings. During those performances he cooperated with various renowned artists such as Lang Lang, Myung-Whun Chung, Renaud Capucon, Emmanuel Pahud, Wenzel Fuchs, etc.  

From 2000 to 2003 Zhang Yi studied as graduate student at the University for Music Saar (Hochschule für Musik Saar) in Saarbrücken, Germany, with the famous German conductor and professor, Max Pommer, obtaining his Master Degree.

Zhang Yi has a vast repertoire whereby he has also shown a great passion for contemporary music, performing many pieces by Chinese and Western contemporary composers. Most memorable are his premier performances in China of I. Stravinsky's "L'historic du Soldat", Ye Xiaogang's chamber work "Nine horses" Chen Qigang's "Extase".

In 2001 he conducted the world premiere of the ballet "Raise the Red Lantern" in Peking, which was composed by Chen Qigang and directed by Zhang Yimou. From 2001 to 2003, he performed this work in Singapore, London and Paris, and is scheduled to take it further on tour throughout the world in the coming years.

In January 2002 he made a recording of works by the Chinese composer Ye Xiaogang with the German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra; "New Music from China", published by Wergo (Germany).

December 2002, Zhang Yi was appointed as the Principal Conductor and Music Director of National Ballet of China Orchestra.

In April 2004 he traveled to Pyong Yang, North Korea, to participate at the International Spring Arts Festival.

May 2006 he was invited to conduct the Cuba Symphony Orchestra at the opening concert of the Cuba Arts Festival held in Havanna.

September 2005 he toured with the Lanzhou Opera House Symphony Orchestra to Australia, performing at the famous Sydney Opera House.

In July 2007 Zhang Yi was invited to perform the celebration concert commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover.

In 2007, 2008, he took the Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra on tour to Europe for the performance of several concerts and the ballet "Dunhuang my Dreamland" at Vienna's famous hall, Musikverein, and Paris' Palais des Congres.

In June 2008, he successfully toured with the Royal Swedish Ballet through China. Following the great achievement and wonderful cooperation, Zhang Yi has been invited to Sweden, and is scheduled to perform the ballet Onegin with the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm in January 2010.

In 2008 he recorded the music for the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, including the famous opening tune "You and Me".

July 2008 Zhang Yi performed with the China National Ballet Orchestra at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.

In January 2009 he performed at the Paris Opera House with the Orchestre Colonne and the China National Ballet Orchestra.
